Special Feature Podcast with President and CEO of FLOMO/Nygala Corp.
Wendy Shen, founder of FLOMO, breaks down her journey from a small family stationery business in Taiwan, to a thriving global brand.
Nygala origins: The name comes from “NY (New York) and Gala (Party) forming Nygala, reflecting the company’s expansion into party and celebration products.
Entrepreneurial transition: The family business began in Taiwan producing pencil cases and stationery. Wendy later expanded it into the U.S. building her own business and moving into categories such as party stationery, holiday products, and crafting.
Building a team: While pursuing her MBA in the U.S. during the day and working on the business at night, she realized that sustainable growth required building a strong team.
Family mentorship: Her parents served as important business mentors, giving her a strong foundation and family support.
Financial discipline & Risk management: Even attractive opportunities may not be worth the risk. The company once walked away from a roughly $1.5B business proposal after extensive discussions because the prospective customer’s credit could not be insured.
Women in business: While many leadership and succession roles have traditionally gone to men, younger generations of women are increasingly stepping into family businesses. Something Wendy is passionate about.
Power of peer communities: Women’s organizations and groups such as WEGG have provided Wendy with a trusted network she describes as being like sisters and business advisors—a source of ideas, perspective, and support.
“Global grit”: The ability to survive, thrive, and grow through both good and difficult times by adapting, staying resilient, managing risk, and overcoming challenges across countries, challenges, business models, and generations.
